Designed for adults with little or no accounting experience, this practical programme teaches you how to process financial transactions, complete daybooks and cashbooks, and prepare accurate invoices and credit notes.
You'll also learn key skills such as analysed cashbooks and bank reconciliation.

It suits beginners who prefer clear, structured learning and hands-on practice with real accounting documents.
Whether you're returning to education, exploring a new career path, or strengthening your understanding of financial transactions, this course provides a supportive introduction to core bookkeeping principles.
This is an entry level bookkeeping course and no prior accounting knowledge is required. You should have English, maths and basic IT skills at Level 1.
If you do not meet these entry requirements, you will complete a short maths assessment to ensure you have the skills needed to succeed and progress confidently through the course.
What will I learn?
You will learn the essential skills needed to process financial transactions accurately and use key bookkeeping documents with confidence. The course covers:
- Checking transaction accuracy.
- Completing daybooks and cashbooks.
- Calculating sales invoices and credit notes.
You will also develop the ability to handle more complex tasks, including analysed daybooks, analysed cashbooks and bank reconciliation.
By the end of the course, you will have a solid foundation in single entry bookkeeping and the practical skills needed for further study or entry level finance roles.
How will I learn?
You'll learn through a mix of tutor-led teaching, guided practice and hands-on activities using a PC. Sessions include explanations, discussions, worked examples and individual tasks to build confidence at a steady pace.
Your tutor will give regular verbal and written feedback to support your progress. All learning resources are available on Microsoft Teams and in your MyAAT learning portal so you can practise at home and prepare for the course assessments.
Eligibility requirements
You must be aged 18 or over on 31st August 2026 to enrol on this course. You may be eligible for fee reductions or one of WM College bursaries.
