From basic bookkeeping practices to the recording and interpretation of complex financial transactions, if you are self-employed, a small business or just wanting to support someone in their booking keeping, then this is the course for you.
There is no need for any prior accounting or bookkeeping knowledge. This course provides a solid grounding for learners before moving on to the Level 2 qualification.
Content
The course introduces the role of a bookkeeper and gives you the knowledge to carry out simple bookkeeping tasks. These include income and expenditure, profit and loss, and assets and liabilities.
It provides you an understanding on why it is important to keep accurate and up to date financial information in business.
The course is structured around five themes:
- Understanding the role of the bookkeeper.
- Understanding financial transactions.
- Processing customer and supplier transactions.
- Processing receipts and payments.
- Understanding the benefits and risks of using accounting software to complete bookkeeping tasks.
Please note: This is a fast paced course, with classes twice a week. There will be a computer based exam at the end of the course that will take place in a classroom at Sutton College.

Eligibility requirements
You will need to be working at Level 1 in your English and maths skills.
If you do not achieve Level 1 in your English and maths Skills Builder Assessment you must have UK English and maths Level 1 qualifications or above.
You will be asked to provide your certificates during the Course Approval Assessment.
You must also be competent in the use of ICT in order to complete unit assignments and access course information provided online.
This course is a qualification therefore you must attend all sessions and complete all assessment tasks to the required standard.
